Best Time to Visit Victoria Falls: A Local, Honest Month-by-Month Guide

There is no single best month to visit Victoria Falls — only the best season for what matters most to you. This guide explains, honestly and without marketing spin, how water levels, weather and safari conditions change through the year on the Zimbabwe side, so you can choose the right time for your trip rather than guessing.

The short answer

The best time to visit Victoria Falls depends on your priority. February to May brings the highest water and the most dramatic spray, but heavy mist can soften close-up views. June to July offers a strong balance of high water and clearing skies as the safari season begins. August to October is dry season: clearer Falls views, the best game viewing, and the strongest conditions for the Chobe day trip. November to January brings lower, more variable water, clearer gorge views and occasional Zambia-side pool access when conditions allow. There is no wrong month — only the wrong month for what you came to see.
FEBRUARY – MAY

High water: the Falls at their most powerful

This is usually the highest-water period of the year, with the Zambezi in full flood. Spray can rise hundreds of metres into the air and often drifts across the viewpoints, which means dramatic thunder and mist but sometimes reduced visibility of the Falls face itself. Rain gear is essential on the Zimbabwe-side walking trail. Game viewing is quieter, as thicker bush and full waterholes spread wildlife out across the park.
Best for: the classic high-water spectacle and dramatic photography. Trade-off: heavier mist, quieter game drives.
JUNE – JULY

The balanced window

Water levels are still strong, but spray begins to settle, giving clearer views of the Falls face alongside the drama of full flow. Days are dry, cool and comfortable, and the safari season is opening: wildlife starts concentrating around the Zambezi and the surrounding waterholes as smaller pans dry out. This is widely considered the most balanced window of the year.
Best for: travellers who want strong water, clearer views and comfortable safari conditions together.
AUGUST – OCTOBER

Dry season: clear Falls, prime safari

This is peak dry season. Spray drops significantly, so the Falls face is at its clearest and most photographable, even as flow decreases through October. It is also the strongest window for wildlife: animals concentrate around the Zambezi and permanent waterholes, making game drives from the lodge and the Chobe / Botswana day trip especially rewarding. It is also the busiest and warmest period, with October regularly the hottest month.
Best for: safari, the Chobe day trip and clear-sky Falls photography. Trade-off: lower water volume, peak heat, higher demand.
NOVEMBER – JANUARY

Low water and seasonal highlights

Water is typically at its lowest, and in a dry year parts of the Zimbabwe-side Falls can slow to a trickle by late October into November. Rains usually return in November, gradually rebuilding flow through December and January. This is when Zambia-side seasonal experiences such as Devil's Pool or Angel's Pool may become accessible, subject to official water-level decisions. Afternoon storms bring dramatic skies and green, refreshed landscapes.
Best for: lower crowds, green scenery and travellers flexible about water levels. Trade-off: the Falls may run low or dry in parts.
