WILDLIFE, HONESTLY

Will You See the Big Five Around Victoria Falls? The Honest Answer

"Big Five" gets used loosely in safari marketing, often without saying which animals are actually likely and where. Here's the honest version: what you'll realistically see around Mutsviri and on the Chobe day trip, where rhino actually lives, and how to complete the full five if it matters to you.

The short answer

Four of the Big Five — elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard — are realistic sightings around Mutsviri Game Lodge and on the Chobe day trip. Rhino is not a realistic expectation in this part of Zambezi National Park or on the standard Chobe day trip. Dedicated rhino tracking takes place in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park on the Zambia side, arranged as a separate day trip through our local partner.
We say this upfront because it's the honest answer, not the vaguer one. A lot of "Big Five" marketing skips this detail entirely — we'd rather you know exactly what to expect before you book.
AROUND MUTSVIRI & CHOBE

Four of the five

Elephants are regularly observed in the wider landscape around Mutsviri, but timing and sightings vary naturally. Buffalo, lion and leopard are realistic on game drives and especially on the Chobe day trip, where the concentration of wildlife is higher. Sightings are common but never guaranteed on any single outing.

Rhino: a dedicated experience

Dedicated white rhino tracking takes place in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park on the Zambia side, arranged through our local partner as a separate day trip. It offers a strong chance of a sighting due to intensive protection, but wildlife encounters remain subject to conditions and are never guaranteed. If completing the Big Five matters to you, tell us when you plan your stay and we will build it into your itinerary.

CHOOSE BY PRIORITY

Each of the five, honestly

Where each animal actually is, how likely a sighting is, and what it means for your trip planning.
REGULARLY OBSERVED

Elephant

Zambezi National Park, right around Mutsviri. Elephants are regularly observed in the wider landscape, but timing and sightings vary naturally.
CHOBE STRENGTHENS THE ODDS

Buffalo

Seen around Zambezi National Park, with better odds on the Chobe day trip thanks to large resident herds along the river.
REALISTIC, NOT GUARANTEED

Lion

Present in both Zambezi National Park and Chobe. Sightings depend on the day — game drives during drier months tend to improve the odds.
ELUSIVE BUT PRESENT

Leopard

Present in Zambezi National Park, but naturally elusive and mostly active at night — a genuine highlight if you see one, not something to plan a trip around.
OPTIONAL ADD-ON
MOSI-OA-TUNYA, ZAMBIA SIDE

Rhino

Dedicated white rhino tracking in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park on the Zambia side, arranged through our local partner as a separate day trip. It offers a strong chance of a sighting, but wildlife encounters remain subject to conditions and are never guaranteed.
The honest takeaway: four of the Big Five are a realistic part of your Mutsviri stay and Chobe day trip. If rhino matters to you, tell us when you plan your stay and we'll arrange a Mosi-oa-Tunya rhino tracking outing to complete the five.
