ZAMBIA-SIDE SEASONAL EXPERIENCE

Devil's Pool at Victoria Falls: Is It Safe, and When Can You Swim?

Devil's Pool is one of the most photographed experiences at Victoria Falls — and one of the most misunderstood. It's only accessible for part of the year, only from the Zambia side, and only with a guide. Here's an honest look at what it actually takes to visit safely, and when it's realistically open.

The short answer

Devil's Pool is a natural rock pool right at the edge of Victoria Falls, reached via Livingstone Island on the Zambia side, where a rock lip lets swimmers safely look over the edge of the falling water. It's only accessible when the Zambezi's water level is low enough — roughly September/October through December/January in a typical year — and access is always guided, never self-guided.
Exact opening and closing dates are subject to official water-level decisions each year and can shift earlier or later than a typical season, so we always confirm current access with our Zambia-side partners before you travel.
SAFETY & ACCESS

Guided, briefed, and controlled

Visits are led by experienced local guides who know the current water conditions, with a safety briefing before entry. Access is only ever arranged through official operators on the Zambia side — never independently.
SEASON & WATER LEVEL

Not open year-round

Devil's Pool closes when the Zambezi rises during and after the rainy season. It's not accessible in the same months that offer the fullest, most dramatic Falls (see our Best Time to Visit guide) — the two experiences are, by nature, a trade-off.

CHOOSE BY PRIORITY

Planning around the season

What you want most from your visit should decide when you travel — Devil's Pool and the fullest Falls don't happen in the same months.
WANT TO SWIM AT THE EDGE

Time it for low water

Plan roughly September/October through December/January, and confirm current access with us close to your travel dates — the exact window shifts each year.
WANT THE FULLEST FALLS

Time it for high water

The Falls are at their most dramatic when the river is high — which is exactly when Devil's Pool is closed. Choose the experience that matters most to you.
NOT SURE YET

Tell us your priority

When you plan your stay, tell us if Devil's Pool matters to you — we'll advise on timing and whether it's realistic for your dates before you book.
Mutsviri Game Lodge is based on the Zimbabwe side of Victoria Falls, inside Zambezi National Park. Devil's Pool is not a Mutsviri-owned activity and is not on the Zimbabwe side — it's an optional day trip across the border to the Zambia side, arranged through official operators there.
The trip involves a border crossing. Where eligible, the KAZA UniVisa — currently US$50 — makes moving between Zimbabwe and Zambia easier; we advise you on the best option for your passport, route and current border rules when we arrange the day trip.
The honest takeaway: if Devil's Pool is a priority, plan your trip in the dry-season window and book early enough for us to arrange the Zambia-side day trip around confirmed water levels.
