HONEST COMPARISON

Town hotel, riverfront lodge or Mutsviri — which fits your trip?

Three honest options near Victoria Falls, compared on what actually matters for a South African trip: location, price shape, what's included and who each is really built for — including where Mutsviri isn't the right fit.
A TOWN HOTEL IN VICTORIA FALLS
Location
In town — walking distance to restaurants and shops, but away from the park and the wildlife.
Price shape
Often a lower nightly rate, but game drives, transfers and most meals are booked and paid separately.
What's included
Usually room-only or bed & breakfast. Safari and Chobe are extras arranged with a separate operator.
Best for
A short overnight stop before or after a longer trip elsewhere.
A RIVERFRONT SAFARI LODGE
Location
Scenic riverfront setting, often further from the Falls, with more transfer time to and from town.
Price shape
Higher nightly rate; Chobe and cross-border add-ons are usually quoted and booked separately.
What's included
Full board is common, but Chobe, transfers and border logistics are typically coordinated through multiple providers.
Best for
Travellers who want a polished lodge feel and are happy to coordinate the extras themselves.
MUTSVIRI GAME LODGE
Location
Inside Zambezi National Park, 15 minutes from the Falls — wildlife around camp, not a drive away.
Price shape
From US$386 pp/night, South African / regional rate, all-inclusive: full board, drinks, game drive and Chobe on every 3-night stay.
What's included
One quote, one local team — lodge, transfers, guided activities and a full-day Chobe river-and-land safari in Botswana, coordinated together.
Honest trade-off
Just six chalets, so high season books out early — and there's no restaurant strip to walk to on your doorstep.
Who is Mutsviri really for?
South African families and couples who want Victoria Falls, safari and Chobe as one relaxed trip — not three separate bookings with three different providers.
One local team coordinates your lodge stay, confirmed transfers, guided activities and the Chobe day trip, so you spend your three nights enjoying the trip instead of managing it.
If what you're after is a big-hotel strip with nightlife on your doorstep, a town hotel will suit you better — and that's a fair trade to make with open eyes.

DIFFERENT TRAVELLERS, DIFFERENT RHYTHMS

The one Victoria Falls stay South Africans don't have to compromise on

Every South African traveller starts from a different place — some know Kruger well, some are driving up through Botswana or Namibia, some just want a few private days away. The examples below show how Mutsviri fits different trips. They are not fixed packages — your stay is shaped around your dates and priorities.
Couple relaxing on a private chalet deck at Mutsviri Game Lodge
COUPLES & MILESTONE JOURNEYS

Private time for honeymoons, anniversaries and meaningful escapes

Mutsviri suits couples planning a honeymoon, anniversary or private Victoria Falls escape. With only six chalets, it stays personal and quiet — and as a South African passport holder, you qualify for the regional SADC rate, priced differently to a standard international safari lodge.
✓ Private luxury tented chalet
✓ Regional SADC rate for SA passport holders
✓ Quiet lodge time, not another Kruger repeat
FIRST TIME AT THE FALLS, NOT FIRST TIME ON SAFARI

New scenery, familiar comfort

You've probably already done Kruger. Victoria Falls and Chobe are a different kind of safari — no fences around camp, and one of Africa's largest elephant herds gathering on the Chobe riverfront, a density most South African reserves don't have. One local team guides you through both, so nothing about the region feels unfamiliar.
✓ Chobe's elephant herds — a different scale to Kruger
✓ Guided activities and coordinated transfers
✓ One local team, start to finish
Solo traveller with guide at Victoria Falls
SOLO TRAVELLERS

A private base outside the town rush, with local support close by

Mutsviri gives solo travellers their own private chalet, 15 minutes outside Victoria Falls town — away from the scams and after-dark hassle that can catch out visitors staying in the centre. Activities, meals and transfers are coordinated around your itinerary, so you're never figuring out a stage of the trip alone.
✓ Private chalet, away from the town centre
✓ Guided experiences with local support
✓ Individual rate confirmed before booking
ADULT FAMILIES & SMALL PRIVATE GROUPS

Chobe's elephants up close — a sighting the kids won't get in Kruger

Mutsviri works well for families and small private groups, whether you fly in or drive up through Botswana yourselves. The Chobe river safari puts elephant herds and hippo pods right alongside the boat, close enough that it doesn't feel like just another game drive — and there's still room for quiet downtime back at the lodge.
✓ Chobe elephants and hippos, up close by boat
✓ Works for fly-in or self-drive arrivals
✓ Space for private downtime at the lodge
SELF-DRIVE, OVERLAND & PART OF A WIDER TRIP
A private stop for overlanders, or an easy add-on to Kruger and Cape Town
Plenty of South Africans reach Victoria Falls the way we do it too — self-driving up through Botswana or Namibia, not flying in. Mutsviri works as a comfortable stop at the end of that route, with secure parking and a proper bed after days on gravel roads. Flying instead? It slots in just as easily as an extension to a Kruger or Cape Town itinerary. Either way, South African passport holders qualify for the regional SADC rate at both Victoria Falls and Chobe.
YOUR STAY, YOUR RHYTHM

What a day at Mutsviri can look like

These are example days within your 3‒Night Signature Stay enough time to see the Falls properly, safari from the lodge and a full day in Chobe, without rushing any of them.
VICTORIA FALLS

Begin with the reason you came

Start with a guided walk to the main viewpoints while the light and spray are at their best this is what most guests come for. Visit the Big Tree, a giant baobab that has watched over the Falls for centuries, then break for lunch at The Lookout Cafe, Baines' Restaurant or the Big Tree Café all a short walk or drive from the viewpoints. In the afternoon, see it all again from above on an optional Victoria Falls helicopter ride over Batoka Gorge, before returning to Mutsviri for sunset at the lodge.

GAME DRIVES FROM THE LODGE

Sunrise, breakfast, then the difference a park boundary makes

Start before sunrise, when the light and the wildlife activity is at its best, then return to the lodge for a full English breakfast. Because Mutsviri sits inside Zambezi National Park itself, there are no fences and no fixed roads: your guide can follow the animals off the beaten track, and elephant, buffalo and other wildlife regularly move straight through camp something a fenced reserve or a lodge outside the park simply can't offer.
In the evening, gather at the bar before a bush dinner under the stars, or head out again on a night game drive to spot the nocturnal wildlife you'd otherwise miss.
Sunrise game drive, then a full English breakfast back at the lodge
No fences, no fixed roads your guide tracks wherever the wildlife leads
Elephant, buffalo and other wildlife regularly move straight through camp
Guided walking safari on request (min. age 16)
Sundowners at the bar, then a bush dinner under the stars
Night game drive spot the wildlife that's only active after dark
INCLUDED WITH THE 3-NIGHT STAY

A full-day Chobe safari in Botswana — game drive and river safari

This Victoria Falls Botswana day trip combines two experiences most travellers plan separately: a Chobe game drive and a Chobe River boat cruise, in a single Chobe day trip from Victoria Falls. Chobe National Park holds one of Africa's largest elephant populations, and the river draws in buffalo, hippo and crocodile in numbers rarely matched nearby. Road transfers, border‒process support and lunch are all included, so the cross‒border logistics are ours to handle, not yours.

Victoria Falls white-water rafting through the Batoka Gorge rapids — one of the world's great one-day runs. Full-day and half-day options for guests who want real adrenaline.

Want even more adrenaline? Victoria Falls bungee jumping, zip‒lining and the gorge swing can all be arranged on request too.
We'll arrange any of it around your Signature Stay — just tell us what you have in mind.
BETWEEN THE EXPERIENCES

The moments between the experiences matter too

Your stay does not have to be a race from one activity to the next. Breakfast and dinner can be enjoyed back at Mutsviri, while time between experiences can be used for lunch in Victoria Falls, High Tea, a gallery or craft stop — or simply a few quiet hours back at the lodge.
We build the days around your confirmed itinerary, rather than forcing every guest into the same schedule.

MORNING

Breakfast around the day ahead

Start slowly at Mutsviri before Victoria Falls, a game drive or the day's next experience. Breakfast is coordinated around your confirmed itinerary, with time to enjoy the lodge rather than beginning every morning in a rush.
BETWEEN EXPERIENCES

Stay in town for a while — or head back to the bush

A few free hours can become part of the experience too. Stop for lunch in Victoria Falls, enjoy High Tea at the Victoria Falls Hotel, browse local art and crafts, or return to Mutsviri for an unhurried afternoon at the lodge.
Optional town experiences are arranged around your itinerary and are not included unless stated in your quote.

EVENING

Come back to dinner in the bush

If you would rather spend an evening in Victoria Falls, we can also help you fit a restaurant or cultural dining experience around your stay.
IN TOWN, IF YOU HAVE TIME
🍽️

The Lookout Cafe

Cliffside views over the gorge and a relaxed lunch stop — an easy way to fill a free hour between Falls viewpoints.
🫖

Victoria Falls Hotel High Tea

A classic afternoon tea at the historic Victoria Falls Hotel — elegant, optional, easy to fit around your itinerary.
FOOD THAT FEELS LIKE HOME

Sundowners, rooibos and a proper braai

You'll recognise the pace here. Sundowners come with Amarula or Savanna if you want them, and there's rooibos at breakfast alongside the coffee. On one evening of your stay, we light the coals for a proper bush braai — kudu, boerewors and pap, cooked in front of you the way it should be, not a polite tasting menu. This is home food, moved 1,600 km north.
🔥

Bush Braai Night

Kudu, boerewors and pap over open coals — a real braai, not a European tasting menu in disguise.
🍹

Sundowners, Your Way

Amarula, Savanna or a G&T on your deck as the sun drops over the bush — whatever you'd order at home.

Rooibos at Breakfast

Rooibos alongside the coffee every morning — a small, familiar detail that's easy to miss until it's there.
SAFARI & VICTORIA FALLS, ONE BASE

Sunrise game drives from the lodge, Victoria Falls minutes away

Mutsviri sits on 70 hectares of leased land inside Zambezi National Park — wildlife moves around camp, and your safari begins from the lodge itself, not a separate excursion booked elsewhere.
FROM CAMP

Zambezi National Park game drive

Sunrise safari leaving directly from the lodge, plus a flexible night game drive since you're already inside the park.
ON FOOT

Guided walking safari

An approximately two-hour guided walk, subject to guide availability, fitness and safety on the day.
MINUTES AWAY

Victoria Falls & the Zambezi

A guided Falls tour and sunset cruise on the Zambezi, both around 15 minutes from the lodge.

BOOKING DIRECT VS. A TOUR OPERATOR

Why book directly with Mutsviri?

South African operators like Wild Horizons, Shearwater, Bhejane Adventures and Rhino Africa book Mutsviri for their own clients every season — at a marked-up price. You can book the same chalets, the same guides and the same Chobe game drives directly, at the rate they pay, with the owner answering your questions instead of a call centre.

A Local Tour Operator

Books Mutsviri (or a similar lodge) on your behalf, adds a margin, and hands you off to whichever guide is rostered that week.

An Online Reseller

Lists the same room at a marked-up rate, takes a commission, and can't answer a question about the actual chalet or this week's water levels.

Booking Direct with Mutsviri

Same chalets, same guides, same Chobe drives — at the rate operators pay, with Tendayi, Abigail or Florian answering directly.
QUESTIONS FROM SOUTH AFRICAN GUESTS

Frequently asked questions

How do I get there from South Africa?
Fly nonstop to Victoria Falls with Airlink — about 1h35 from Johannesburg, or about 2h55 direct from Cape Town. Our team arranges your transfer from the airport as part of every stay.
Do South African citizens need a visa?
No visa is required for South African passport holders visiting Zimbabwe for short stays. If you plan to cross into Zambia or Botswana as well, ask us about the KAZA Univisa option.
Can we pay in ZAR?
Rates are quoted in US dollars, and we accept payment in ZAR or USD. Your written quote will confirm the exact total for your booking.
Is malaria prophylaxis needed?
Zambezi National Park is in a malaria area. We recommend speaking with your doctor or a travel clinic ahead of your trip about prophylaxis and general travel health precautions.
How many nights do we need?
Three nights is our recommended minimum for the full experience — one full day for Victoria Falls and Zambezi safari, and one full day for the included Chobe/Botswana day trip.
Is the Chobe day trip really included?
Yes — on every 3-Night Signature Stay, in every season. Transfer, border-process support, game drive, river boat safari, lunch and park fees are all included. Visa formalities are handled separately.
When is the best time to visit?
Every season has its appeal — Green Season (Dec–Mar) is lush and quieter, Mid Season (Apr, May, Nov) balances value and conditions, and High Season (Jun–Oct) offers peak game viewing and the fullest Falls flow early in the period.
Who runs Mutsviri Game Lodge?
Mutsviri is owned and run by Tendayi and Abigail, and is a product of Africa Premier Safaris, registered as an entity of Africa Premier Safaris with the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority.
MORE COMMON QUESTIONS

Safari, logistics & lodge questions

Which airport should I fly into for Victoria Falls?
Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) is the easiest option, with direct Airlink flights from both Johannesburg (about 1h35) and Cape Town (about 2h55). It's a 15-minute transfer to the lodge, which we arrange for you.
Should I stay on the Zimbabwe side or the Zambia side?
The Zimbabwe side has the better views — most of the Falls face this way — plus easier access to safari in Zambezi National Park. Mutsviri is 15 minutes from the Falls on the Zimbabwe side.
What are typical Victoria Falls hotel prices?
Hotel prices near Victoria Falls vary widely by location, season and inclusions — town hotels are often room-only, while lodges near Victoria Falls can include meals and activities. Our 3-Night Signature Stay is quoted as one all-inclusive rate covering accommodation, meals, game drive and the Chobe day trip — ask us for your written regional quote.
What's actually included in a Victoria Falls package?
Every Mutsviri package includes accommodation, full board, a sunrise game drive, and the Chobe/Botswana day trip with transfers, park fees and lunch. Flights are the only thing booked separately.
Can I combine a safari with my Victoria Falls stay?
Yes — every stay includes a sunrise game drive in Zambezi National Park, right from the lodge. No extra travel or separate booking required.
What animals might I see on a Zambezi safari?
Zambezi National Park is home to elephant, buffalo, hippo and crocodile along the river, with lion and leopard sightings also possible. Your guide tracks the best routes each morning.
Which is the best accommodation or lodge near Victoria Falls?
It depends what you're after. Most accommodation near Victoria Falls is in town. Mutsviri is one of the few lodges actually inside Zambezi National Park — 15 minutes from the Falls, with wildlife moving through camp instead of a drive to find it.
How much does a Zimbabwe safari typically cost?
Safari-inclusive stays in this region generally run from ZAR 20,000–45,000 per person depending on season and nights. Our all-inclusive packages are priced to remove the guesswork — one quote, no hidden extras.
TWO MORE THINGS SOUTH AFRICAN TRAVELLERS ASK

Cost from South Africa, and lodge vs. hotel

How much does it cost to go to Victoria Falls from South Africa?
Two things make up the cost: your flight and your stay. Flights run nonstop with Airlink — about 1h35 from Johannesburg, or about 2h55 direct from Cape Town. We're happy to share route and timing tips, but we don't book flights ourselves, so this is booked directly with the airline or your travel agent.
Your stay is the part we handle: the 3-Night Signature Stay starts from US$386 per person per night (South African / regional rate) or US$500 (international), all-inclusive with Chobe. Share your dates and we'll send a full written quote covering both.
What is the difference between a lodge and a hotel?
A hotel is typically a building in town — a room, with game drives, transfers and meals booked as separate extras.
A lodge like Mutsviri is different: a private property inside Zambezi National Park, where full board, drinks and activities are already included, and wildlife moves around camp instead of you driving out to find it. Same region, a fundamentally different stay.
SAFETY, WILDLIFE & THE ROAD

A few more honest questions

Is it safe to stay outside Victoria Falls town, inside the national park?

Yes — and for most guests it feels safer than town. Mutsviri is a small, gated camp with staff on-site around the clock, a generator for power cuts, and no through-traffic. The animals you hear at night are the point of being here; our guides brief every guest on camp rules on arrival, and nobody walks between chalets unescorted after dark.

Will we actually see the Big Five?

Honestly — elephant and buffalo, almost certainly; Chobe has one of the highest elephant densities in Africa, denser than most of Kruger. Lion and leopard are possible but not guaranteed on a 2-3 night stay. Rhino requires a dedicated Zimbabwe or Zambia excursion. We'd rather tell you this now than oversell it in the brochure.

Can I drive myself from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls?

Yes. The common route runs via Martin's Drift or the Kazungula Bridge, roughly 18-20 hours of driving spread over 2 days with an overnight stop in Botswana. It's a well-worn overland route with fuel, food and border posts along the way. Tell us your route when you book and we'll send border and timing notes specific to your crossing.

Can we combine Victoria Falls with a Namibia self-drive loop?

It's one of the most popular overland routes we see — Namibia through the Caprivi Strip, across the Kazungula Bridge, with Mutsviri as the Victoria Falls leg before or after Chobe. We're set up for self-drive arrivals: secure overnight parking, workshop contacts nearby if needed, and a proper bed and hot shower at the end of a long dirt-road day.

GUEST VOICES

What guests remember about Mutsviri Game Lodge

"It was just really peaceful, quiet, tranquil."
We weren't too sure what to expect. Then we got shown the room — the staff were just amazing, and it's quite overwhelming when you walk in because it's just so big. The food quality is brilliant — I have had no complaints. If someone asked me what my perfect African escape would be, I think this would be just how I'd describe it.
Lisa, Newcastle, UK
"This was my first safari, and it completely blew me away."
We left before sunrise with torches, and as we drove, the sun came up behind us across a beautiful skyline. Not far from the lodge we saw a spotted hyena, then found ourselves between two elephants. Our guide's knowledge was astounding — he explained the relationships between the animals in such detail.

So when you speak with Florian, you're not speaking with an anonymous booking agent — you're speaking directly with someone who knows the destination and the guest journey from the inside. Replies come from our official Mutsviri Game Lodge channels.
Prefer a quick question first? You can also reach Florian directly via WhatsApp — our official contact for all sales enquiries.
